Latsis-Symposium 2002 ITERATIVE SOLVERS FOR LARGE LINEAR SYSTEMS A conference commemorating 50 years of conjugate gradients ETH Zurich, Switzerland 18 -- 21 February 2002 In 1952, M. Hestenes and E. Stiefel published their seminal paper ``Methods of conjugate gradients for solving linear systems'' in J. Research Nat. Bur. Standards 49 (1952), 409--436''. This conference has the purpose to commemorate this event, review the early and later developments of the conjugate gradient and other Krylov space methods and their preconditioning as well as competing iterative methods for solving linear systems. Lectures on various applications relying on such solvers will be presented too. There will also be a celebration of Professor Gene Golub's 70th birthday. For decades, he has been a promotor of the conjugate gradient method and related tools in numerical analysis. INVITED SPEAKERS: (regular sessions) Bernd Beckermann Van Henson Wei-Pai Tang Howard Elman Tim Kelley Ray Tuminaro Charbel Farhat Gerard Meurant Gene Wachspress Roland Freund Dianne O'Leary Gabriel Wittum Anne Greenbaum Chris Paige Henk van der Vorst Michael Griebel Youcef Saad INVITED SPEAKERS: (public session on early history of the CG method, Monday evening) Fritz L. Bauer Urs Hochstrasser John Todd PROGRAM COMMITTEE: (several members of the committee will present talks too) Ron Boisvert Martin Gutknecht Mike Saunders Tony Chan Franklin Luk Zdenek Strakos Jack Dongarra Paul Saylor Paul Van Dooren Walter Gander LOCAL ORGANIZERS: Walter Gander Martin Gutknecht FORMAT: The conference will take place in the main building of ETH Zurich in the center of the city of Zurich. Four 45-minute invited talks are planned for each morning, and 30-minute slots for contributed talks in two parallel sessions are anticipated for the afternoons. Public talks will be given by Fritz L. Bauer, Urs Hochstrasser, and John Todd. A special session and banquet on Tuesday, Feb. 19, will celebrate Gene Golub's 70th birthday. A poster session may also be held (posters could be on display during the whole conference). The conference will start on Monday morning and end at noon on Thursday. SPONSORS: The conference is primarily sponsored by the Latsis Foundation, which is linked to ETH Zurich. There is also a notable financial contribution from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), where Hestenes and Stiefel met and wrote their joint paper.
