The dynamics of a differential algebraic system (DAE) takes place on a lower dimensional manifold in phase space. We investigate DAEs of index 1 an of index 2 and we show that the discrete dynamical system obtained when applying an appropriate numerical integration method to such a DAE also admits an (attractive) invariant manifold close to the manifold of the DAE.
